Ryde, New South Wales

Ryde is a local government area and city in the North Shore region of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It is a major satellite city in Sydney, but is more populous due to its closer proximity to the Sydney central business district (12 km west). It is more working-class than the rest of its surrounding council areas such as Ku-ring-gai and Hunters Hill and has large ethnic Asian and Southern European population.

The area also contains the North Ryde asylum and the now defunct Gladesville Hospital which is located in close proximity to the city. Schools in the area include government schools such as Ryde Secondary College, Marsden High School and Epping Boys High School. It also includes a few private schools such as Holy Cross College Ryde and Marist Brothers College Eastwood. It also includes one of Sydney's main universities, Macquarie University.

The City of Ryde includes the suburbs North Ryde, Denistone, Denistone East, Denistone West, Eastwood, Marsfield, Macquarie Park, Macquarie University, Putney, Tennyson, Meadowbank, Melrose Park, Chatswood West, West Ryde, East Ryde, Top Ryde and part of Gladesville (shared with Hunters Hill).

Ryde contains St Anne's church, which has the grave of Maria Anne "Granny" Smith, in whose orchards the Granny Smith apple was first found. Every year, in the suburb of Eastwood, the granny-smith festival is held in her honor.
