Radio Television of Serbia (Radio Televizija Srbije) is official radio and television broadcaster of Serbia. Its abbreviation is RTS, and channels are named RTS 1, RTS 2 etc. Sometimes, TLA PTC is used to refer to it. Formerly, it was RT of Belgrade.
1929 is considered to be the year of foundation of RTS. The formation of RTS was the result of the decision of republican executive council on 13.02.1958.
The first news announcer in 1929 was Jelena Biblija. She was reading the news over radio to rare owners of radios in that time.
After WWII, the government of new Yugoslavia in 1956. decided to give money for building TV network in country.
23 August of 1958 was the date of first broadcast. It was "Dnevnik" news programme. The first people to appear on the new TV station were Miloje Orlović, Branislav Surutka, Olga Nadj, Olivera ?ivković and Vera Milovanović.
From 1961 RTS had equipment for delay airing.
The first TV receivers were made in Yugoslavia by RR, Cajevac and RIZ.
In 1970 the whole of Serbia was covered with TV signal and number of receivers raised to over 1800000.
Every republic of former Yugoslavia had its own TV station which were named after capital cities (RTB,RTZ,RTNS...).
There were no private stations until the 1990s.
This TV station was controlled by Slobodan Milošević until 5.October 2000. when people got into the building and burned one part of it. After that RTS aired under the name Nova RTS (New RTS) for a few months as symbol that it will never be device of manipulation again.
RTS is planning to restart TVP as 2 channels (1 broadcasting in Albanian, and the other one in Serbian). As well RTS says that they would like to create more stations, including one in Nis, and to reforming NS 2.
