Ride of the Valkyries

Ride of the Valkyries is probably the best known piece by Richard Wagner. It is from Die Walküre and has been used to great effect in a wide variety of films, from the helicopter scene in Apocalypse Now to being lampooned in What's Opera, Doc?.

Wagner's opera dealt with the Valkyrie Brunhilde and her love for the warrior Siegfried. The ride includes a sometimes showy and very romantic aria sung by Brunnhilde. By its excess and flourishes it can be compared to the very classical aria sung by the Queen of the Night in Mozart's The Magic Flute.

Caltech has a tradition of playing Ride of the Valkyries really loud the morning of finals week.
