A rhetorical question is a question posed for rhetorical effect rather than for the purpose of getting an answer.
Some examples of rhetorical questions in English would be:
- "What's the matter with you?"
- "Don't you know any better?"
- "Do you have no shame?"
- "How many times do I have to tell you to stop walking into the house with mud on your shoes?"
- "Is the Pope Catholic; do fish swim?"
- "Are you crazy?"
- "Who cares?"
- "How should I know?"
Often rhetorical questions are phrased as questions but written without a question mark. For example: 'What advice can a Catholic priest give on marriage'.
