A rhetorical question is a question posed for rhetorical effect rather than for the purpose of getting an answer.

Some examples of rhetorical questions in English would be:

"What's the matter with you?"
"Don't you know any better?"
"Do you have no shame?"
"How many times do I have to tell you to stop walking into the house with mud on your shoes?"
"Is the Pope Catholic; do fish swim?"
"Are you crazy?"
"Who cares?"
"How should I know?"

Often rhetorical questions are phrased as questions but written without a question mark. For example: 'What advice can a Catholic priest give on marriage'.
