The Constitution of India has been in effect since 26 January 1950. Hence every year this day (26 January) is celebrated as Republic Day (in India). It is one of the three National Holidays in India.
To mark the importance of this occasion, every year a grand parade is held in the capital, from the Rajghat, along the Vijaypath. The different regiments of the Army, the Navy and the Air force march past in all their finery and official decorations. The President of India takes salute of the contingents of Armed Forces.
Trinidad and Tobago celebrates a holiday called Republic Day on September 24. However, Trinidad and Tobago became a Republic Nation on August 1, 1976. This was fourteen (14) years after we became an Independent Nation (August 31, 1962). As a Republic, we no longer had a Governor General but a President or Head of State. Trinidad and Tobago was now responsible for managing its own affairs.
Our first President was Sir Ellis Clarke.
