Reed Smoot (1862-1941) was a United States Senator who is best known for championing the Hawley-Smoot Tariff in the 1920s.
Smoot was elected as a Republican Senator from Utah in 1902, and served five terms before being defeated in 1932 by Democrat Elbert D. Thomas. He was a member and eventually a high official of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
