The fivepointed red star is a symbol of Communism and represents five fingers of the worker's hand as well as five (inhabited) continents. It was also used to represent the rule of the Communist Party.
Sometimes the hammer and sickle was depicted inside the red star.
It is or was used on several flags and coats of arms of communist countries, for example on the flag of former Yugoslavia.
Russian military newspaper is also called the Red Star (Russian Krasnaya Zvezda).
