Reaction kinetics

Chemical substances in a system may increase or decrease in concentration with time due to chemical reactions. The study of reaction kinetics involves characterizing the rates of such processes in a quantitative fashion.

The reaction rate for a substance in a particular process is defined as the amount (in moles or mass units) per unit time per unit volume that is formed or removed. Knowledge of these rates are essential for the design of processes to produce or destroy chemical substances. Such knowledge is essential in the practice of chemical engineering and environmental engineering.
