Rameshwaram is an island town at the extreme south-eastern limit of the Indian Peninsula.
Rameshwaram is famous for its temple which accounts for more than 80% of its area. This temple is at Dhanushkoti where the famous bridge built by Sri Rama to reach Sri Lanka is still seen with the help of NASA pictures. The temple is associated closely with the Ramayana and Rama's victorious return from Sri Lanka. The grandest part of the temple is the 1219 m pillared corridor. The 3.6m high pillars are big blocks of granite, richly carved and well proportioned. The perspective presented by these pillars run uninterruptedly to a length of nearly 230m.
