Ram Nath Kak (1917-1993) is best known for his autobiography Autumn Leaves: Kashmir Reminiscences. This book presents a vivid picture of life in Kashmir during the 20th century. It is unique because Kashmir does not have a tradition of autobiography. By profession a veterinarian, Kak was a keen observer of society and much interested in Kashmir's own spiritual tradition.
He was married to the poet Sarojini and they had five children: the computer scientist Avinash, the poet and philosopher Subhash, the economist Shakti, the literary theorist Jaishree, and the anthropologist Neeraj.
