Queen Mary

["Mary" is the English translation of the name "Marie" or "Maria" in other languages.]

Among the women known to history as Queen Mary are:

• Mary of Hungary (1371-1395), queen regnant of Hungary, was the daughter of Louis I of Hungary and the wife of Sigismund, Holy Roman Emperor.

• Mary of Gueldres (1433-1463), queen consort of Scotland, was the daughter of Arnold von Geldern, Duke of Gueldres (Burgundy, France), the wife of James II of Scotland and the mother of James III of Scotland

• Mary Tudor (1495-1533), queen consort of France, was the daughter of Henry VII of England, sister of Henry VIII of England, wife of Louis XII of France and the grandmother of Lady Jane Grey.

• Mary of Guise (1515-1560), queen consort and regent of Scotland, was the daughter of Claude, Duke of Guise, second wife of James V of Scotland and the mother of Mary, Queen of Scots.

• Mary, Queen of Scots, (1542-1587), queen regnant of Scotland and queen consort of France, was the daughter of James V of Scotland, wife of François II of France and the mother of James I of England.

• Mary I of England (or Mary Tudor) (1553-1558), queen regnant of England, was the daughter of Henry VIII of England by his first wife Catherine of Aragon and was the second wife of Philip II of Spain.

• Mary of Modena (1658-1718), queen consort of England, was the daughter of Alfonso IV, Duke of Modena, and the second wife of James II of England.

• Mary II of England (1662-1694), queen regnant of England, was the daughter of James II of England, the wife of William III of England and the sister of Anne I of the United Kingdom.

• Mary of Teck (1867-1953), queen consort of the United Kingdom, was the wife of George V of the United Kingdom and the mother of Edward VIII of the United Kingdom and George VI of the United Kingdom.

A Cunard ocean liner, constructed in the 1930s was named the RMS Queen Mary for Mary of Teck. Since its retirement, the liner has been permanently located in Long Beach, California. A second Cunard transatlantic cruise liner took the name RMS Queen Mary 2 and was christened on January 8 2004.

During World War I, a British battlecruiser, HMS Queen Mary, was named after the same queen.
