Pyrénées-Atlantiques is a French département.
The Basses-Pyrénées département was created on March 4, 1790, during the French Revolution, out of a part of the former province of Guyenne (Béarn the French Basque country). Parts of the Basses-Pyrénées also initially belonged to the former province of Gascony.
On October 10, 1969, the Basses-Pyrénées were renamed Pyrénées-Atlantiques (Basses means low).
A part of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques is in the Basque Country.
