List of Prime Ministers of Iraq
The Prime Minister of Iraq is Iraq's head of government.
It was originally an appointed office, subsidiary to the head of state, and the nominal leader of the Iraqi parliament. Under the newly adopted constitution the Prime Minister is to be the country's active executive authority.
From 1920 to 1958 the Prime Minister was appointed by the King of Iraq, and usually held office for a single year before being replaced. After the republican revolution of 1958, the PM became apppointed by the President of Iraq and served much longer terms, although in many circumstances the President held both the PM's office and Presidency simulatinously.
When the decades-long rule of President Saddam Hussein was ended in the 2003 Iraq War, the American occupational authority created an Iraq interim governing council to assist in matters of goverance until soverignity to Iraq was fully restored.
On May 28, 2004 the Iraqi Council named council member Iyad Allawi to assume the post of prime minister in an interim capacity. The council dissolved on June 1, and Allawi assumed office.
