The Porsche 964 is a sports car automobile made by Porsche. It is the Porsche 911 model made from 1989 to 1994. It featured significant styling changes, most prominently the more integrated bumpers (fenders).
The 964 was first available in Carrera 4 guise, the first 911 to have four wheel drive. In 1990 the rear wheel drive Carrera 2 was added to the range. Both the Carrera 4 and 2 were available in coupe, Targa and Cabriolet body styles. A new naturally-aspirated engine called the M64 was used for the Carrera models. It's displacement was 3.6 litres and it's peak power output was 250 bhp (184 kW) @ 6100 rpm.
In 1992, a lightweight, rear wheel drive only version called the Carrera RS was made, based on Porsche's 911 Carrera 'Cup' race car. This had a similar engine to the Carrera 4 and 2 (called the M64/03) but with a slightly increased power output of 260 bhp (191 kW). It also had stiffer suspension, a lower ride height and a stripped-out, lightweight interior.
In 1991 a Turbo model was introduced into to range as the successor to the 930. However, there was not enough time to develop a turbocharged version of the M64 engine, so this car had the same 3.3 litre engine as the 930 but with an increased power output of 320 bhp (235 kW) @ 5750 rpm. In 1993 a new Turbo model was introduced with a 3.6 litre turbocharged M64 engine that produced 360 bhp (265 kW) @ 5500 rpm.
964 is in fact the internal code name for the car; it was always marketed as the 911. However, the 964 name is now often used to distinguish this car from other 911 models.
