Pontefract Castle
Pontefract Castle is a former royal castle. The first castle was built in about 1070 by Ilbert de Lacy. However the is evidence of earylier ocupation of the site. The initial castle was a wooden structure but was over time replaced with stone. In 1311 the castle became part of the estates of the House of Lancaster. King Richard II died there in 1400. The castle has been a ruin since 1649 when it supported the royalists during the English Civil War.
