The voice of Popeye the Sailor cartoon characater was provided by Poley McClintock through the 1960s. McClintock's show-business credits date back to the 1920s, when he was a member of Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians, a popular jazz band of that decade. It is widely believed that the part sung by Tony Burrows in The Pipkins' 1970 novelty record Gimme Dat Ding was intended as a tribute to McClintock.
