Piran

Piran (Italian Pirano) is a town and a municipality with the same name in southwestern Slovenia along the coast of the Adriatic Sea.

Piran is an old Mediterranean town which is situated at the cape of the Piran peninsula. The town is actually one large museum with the medieval architecture and rich culture heritage. Narrow streets and tight houses are a special charm of the town. Piran is an administrative centre of the local area and also an important Slovenian tourist centre.

Piran was the birthplace of composer and violinist Giuseppe Tartini (born April 8, 1692), who has played an important role in the cultural heritage of Piran. Many things in Piran are named after him, such as the Tartini's square, house, etc.

On the occasion of the 200th birth anniversary of their great artist, the people of Piran wished to erect a monument. However, the works protracted somewhat, so that only in the year 1896, the larger than life bronze statue of the "Maestro" was mounted on its pedestal. The monument is the work of the Venetian Antonio dal Zotto. With its well thought out positioning, it dominates the square, and forms unified entity with the Cathedral of St. George, which dominates the town.
