Pinion Simply put, it is the smallest gear in a gear drive train. Many people will tell you the gear that is directly on a motor shaft is the pinion. This is just simply not true. I believe this misconception comes from the fact that in many cases such as RC toys the drive gear is also the smallest gear. So there you can understandably see where the confusion is from.
