Video artist Peter Weibel was born in Odessa in 1944. He studied literature, film, mathematics, medicine and philosophy in Vienna and Paris. His dissertation was on mathematical logic (modal logic). From 1976-81 he lectured Theory of form at the Hochschule für angewandte Kunst (Advanced School for Applied Art) in Vienna. In 1981 he was a guest professor at the College of Art and Design in Halifax, Canada. In the same year Weibel started teaching Design Theory and Visual Education at the Hochschule für angewandte Kunst in Vienna, where he became professor for Visual Media Design in 1984.
Weibel currently works as Chairman and CEO of the Zentrum für Kunst and Medientechnologie (Center for art and media technology) in Karlsruhe, Germany.
His work has been exhibited around the world, for example at Rencontres internationales in the Vidéotheque de Paris in 1990. In 1991 his art was shown at Images du Futur in Montreal, Canada, 1993 at the Image Festival in Rochester, New York. In 1998 his work was displayed at the exhibition Out of Actions at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, California.
