Struck studied law at the universities of Göttingen und Hamburg. In 1971 he graduated to Dr. jur. (doctor of laws).
Peter Struck is a member of the Bundestag since 1980. From 1990 to 1998 he was whip (Parlamentarischer Geschäfstführer) of the SPD parliamentary group. In 1998 he became chairman of the SPD parliamentary group. Four years later he succeded Rudolf Scharping in the position of Defense Minister.
