A pet rock was a fad toy pet during the 1970s.
Pet rocks were pebble size and inhabited a small box similar to a pet cage. A brief pamphlet accompanied the pet rock, supplying information concerning its care, if not its feeding. People who purchased these unusual pets often gave them names, talked to them, petted them, and otherwise acted as if the rocks were alive.
