Paul Holmes

Paul Robert Holmes (born 16 January 1957) is a politician in the United Kingdom. He is Liberal Democrat member of Parliament for Chesterfield, Tony Benn's old seat, and was first elected in 2001.

Another Paul Holmes is a radio and television broadcaster in New Zealand. He is widely reputed to be New Zealand's highest-paid broadcasting personality; he currently has a morning radio talkback show and a prime time evening television show. He has on several occasions gained media prominence for a range of scurrilous remarks on individuals, politicians and diplomats who have media attention.

In September 2003, Holmes infamously described United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan as a "cheeky darkie" during a rant on his radio show. He also said "It is all very well giving a darkie that Secretary-General's job. We will only take so much, I am sorry. We will only take so much. We are not going to be told how to live by a Ghanaian." In the same show, he made several misogynistic comments about female journalists.

There was an international outcry following the comments, but Holmes kept his jobs after making several emotional apologies, claiming he had been "tired".
