Partawi Shah



         


Partawi Shah, who after achieving his scholarly reputation renamed himself as Allamah Nasir al-Din Nasir Hunzai, is a poet. He was born in 1917, in Hyderabad, a small village of Hunza, the Northern Areas of Pakistan. His formal education could not go beyond primary school, but he received an honorary degree of PhD from a university and has been appointed honorary university professor. He is the first Sufi poet to have a Diwan (collection of poems) in the Burushaski language, and is the author of more than one hundred books, of which many have been translated into English, French, Swedish, Persian, Turkish, and Gujarati languages. His works on the Burushaski language, grammar, vocabulary, history and traditions is highly appreciated while his spiritual status is under the shadow of controversies in the Gilgit regions Ismailis.
