An overdrive in automotive and mechanical engineering is a form of gearbox and transmission with a gear ratio that causes the driven wheels to rotate at a higher Rpm than the engine, at a low torque. The advantage is a higher MPG rate. An overdrive is sometimes also (mistakenly) called a freewheel.
