Office of Science and Technology

The Office of Science and Technology is a non-ministerial agency of the British government, headed by the Chief Scientific Adviser, currently Sir David King.

The office is responsible for co-ordination of the government's science- and technology-related activities and policies, and the distribution of some £2.4bn amongst the Research Councils (such as the Medical Research Council).

Since 1995, it has been part of the Department for Trade and Industry, though it was run under the Cabinet Office when it was originally formed in 1992 as a merger of the Office of the Chief Scientific Adviser with the Science Branch of the Department of Education and Science (as then was).
