Odessa (Одеска область, Odeska oblast’ in Ukrainian) is a region of south-western Ukraine. Its capital is Odessa. It includes the historical teritory of southern Bessarabia (or Budjak), north of the Danube River, which was annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940 from Romania, in accord with the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. An important Romanian minority reside in southern Bessarabia
The area of the region is 33000 km², its population (as of 2003-01-01) is 2.4 million people.
