The obelisk of Buenos Aires (in Spanish: obelisco de Buenos Aires) is a modern monument placed at the heart of the city of Buenos Aires. It was built in may of 1936 in order to commemorate the fourth centenary since the founding of the city. It is located in the same spot where the Argentine flag was first raised, at the current intersection of the 9 de Julio and Corrientes avenues. Its total height is 67 meters and its base area is 49 square meters. The architect in charge of its design was Alberto Prebisch. The whole monument was built in barely four weeks.
The obelisk has become the main icon of the city as well as an important symbol of the local culture, particularly of tango music. It is also a main attraction for tourism and a common place for cultural activities (generally sponsored by the government) and assorted popular meetings.
