Nur Jehan (also known as Noor Jehan) was a Mughal Empress. The Emperor Jahangir was her second husband - before that marriage, she was known as Mihrunnisa.
As Jahangir was addicted to opium and alcohol, Nur Jehan governed the country; her niece (later known as Mumtaz Mahal) became the wife of Prince Khurram (later known as Shah Jahan). Her brother Asaf Khan was wesir to Jahangir. When Jahangir died Asaf Khan took the side of his son-in-law Shah Jahan against his sister. Nur Jehan became a prisoner in a small house for the rest of her life. She died in 1643 and is buried in Shadara in Lahore.
