Nikolayevsk-na-Amure is a town located on the northern bank of the Amur river. In the Chinese language the town is also know as 庙街 （Miao Jie).
The area was originally part of imperial China and consisted of the town of 庙街 （Miao Jie). After China lost the Second Opium War, the area was ceded to Russia under the 1858 Aigun Treaty and 1860 Treaty of Peking.
