The word Nibelungen has several meanings, referring to the Burgundian kings portrayed in the epic poem the Nibelungenlied, to the followers of Siegfried featured in the related Volsunga Saga, and to a legendary race of Germanic dwarfs.
In modern culture Nibelungen also commonly evokes the epic opera Der Ring des Nibelungen by Richard Wagner, which was loosely based on these poems.
