National Register of Historic Places

The National Register of Historic Places is the USA's official list of districts, sites, buildings, structures, and objects worthy of preservation. The more than 75,000 listings represent significant icons of American culture, history, engineering, and architecture. Administered by the National Park Service, part of the United States Department of the Interior, the Register was authorized under the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. Its goals are to coordinate and help public and private programs and groups such as the National Trust for Historic Preservation identify and protect U. S. historic sites.
