Nabisco, originally short for National Biscuit Company, is a United States based corporation best known for making cookies and snacks such as Oreos, Chips Ahoy, Fig Newtons, Ritz Crackers, Triscuits, Teddy Grahams, and Wheat Thins.
The National Biscuit Company was incorporated in 1898 from the merger of three companies, New York Biscuit, American Biscuit, and United States Baking. The biscuit in the name of the company reflects British and older American usage. With a few exceptions -- Arrowroot Biscuits -- the company uses the American terms cookie and cracker for its products.
From 1985 to 1998, Nabisco was owned by R.J. Reynolds. As of 2003, Nabisco was owned by Kraft Foods North America, which is in turn owned by Altria Group (Formerly Philip Morris Companies).
