The history of Myanmar can be said to have begun with the Prome Dynasty, which had ended by the 1st century. The immediate ancestors of the people of Myanmar were said to be Mongolian. Since then, Myanmar's culture has been profoundly influenced by Chinese, Indian and Thai cultures.

Myanmar's music is melodious, and generally without harmony, an dis usually in 4/4 time (nayee se) or 2/4 (walet se) or 8/16 (walet amyan). Musical instruments include the brass se and bamboo wa, as well as the well-known saung, a kind of harp.
