United States mountain rescue agencies can be subdivided into professional and volunteer organizations. Often professional and non-professional organizations will combine resources to respond to a given incident. Mountain rescue often involves wilderness searches, cliff rescue, and/ or evacuation by foot or helicopter.
Professional organizations involved with mountain rescue usually provide mountain rescue services as minor portion of their full time responsibilities. The two major types of professional orgainzations are ski patrols at established ski resorts, and national park service units.
