Monkey's Audio

Monkey?s Audio is a lossless audio compression codec. Unlike lossy methods such as MP3, Ogg Vorbis, or Advanced Audio Coding that permanently discard quality to save space, Monkey?s Audio compresses audio in a mathmatically perfect way, creating bit-for-bit copies. That means it always sounds perfect, no matter how many times you burn to a CD, rip and re-encode.

One reason lossless codecs don't enjoy greater popularity is because their compression ratios are always far lower than "lossy" options, and thus the resulting files take up a premium of hard drive space. An Mp3 at 128kb/s is about 10 times smaller than the original WAV, while a file encoded with Monkey's Audio will rarely even pull a 2:1.

Monkey's Audio is a modern, fully featured (and free) codec which boasts excellent encoding speed, compression ratios and player support. Its only real competitor is FLAC.

Other lossless audio compression methods include: FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec), SHN (shorten), OFR (optimfrog) and
