Metropolitan bishop

A metropolitan bishop, usually called simply a metropolitan, is an archbishop who has authority over the other bishops in his province, called suffragan bishops. In the Western Church metropolitans and archbishops are basically the same, but in the Eastern Church metropolitans are superior to ordinary archbishops.
