Metre-tonne-second system of units

The metre-tonne-second or mts system of units is a system of physical units introduced in the Soviet Union in 1933, but abolished in 1955. It was built on the same principles as the cgs system, but with larger units for industrial use (while the cgs system was regarded as suitable for laboratory use only).

Units

The units of mts are as follows:

• length: metre
• mass: tonne. 1 t = 10³ kg
• time: second
• force: sthene. 1 sn = t·m·s^-2 = 10³ N
• energy: kilojoule. 1 kJ = t·m²·s^-2 = 10³ J
• power: kilowatt. 1 kW = t·m²·s^-3 = 10³ W
• pressure: pieze. 1 pz = t·m^-1·s^-2 = 10³ Pa
