MetaFilter, known as MeFi to insiders, is a community weblog started by Matthew Haughey in 1999. From its humble beginnings as a gathering spot for A-List webloggers to trade links, the community has blossomed into a 17,000-member-strong group. As only members can post links or comments, and new member sign-ups have often been switched off to prevent overload on the system, Metafilter has developed a fairly stable community with a variety of in-jokes.
MetaFilter has a reputation as a left-leaning community. A survey of (self-selected) MeFi members in February 2003 found a clear tendency to the left on economic issues and to liberalism on social issues.
A companion site, MetaTalk (or MeTa), exists to discuss the workings - technical and social - of Metafilter. A third site, Ask MetaFilter, was launched in late 2003.
