Megakaryocyte

The megakaryocyte is a bone marrow cell that functions as a committed precursor for platelets. It is so called because on light microscopy it has many nuclei (karyo) and is exceptionally large (mega). ()

Megakaryocyte function is determined by a large number of cytokines, including thrombopoietin.

The developmental history of the megakaryocyte is: hemocytoblast -> megakaryocyte -> promegakaryocyte -> megakaryocyte
