Masterton

Masterton is the largest town (and local government district) in the Wairarapa region of New Zealand.

Named after pioneer Joseph Masters, it was first settled by Europeans on 21 May 1854. Now, 150 years on, Masterton is a thriving community with a population of not quite 20,000 (and it therefore did not quite qualify to be a city by 1989 when the minimum was lifted from 20,000 to 50,000). It is an hour's drive from both Wellington and Palmerston North.

A commuter rail link allows many residents easy access to work in the cities of Wellington, Lower Hutt, or Upper Hutt.

The town has more than its share of secondary schools, most of which attract pupils from some distance away.

It is the headquarters of the world-famous Golden Shears.
