Waterland is a municipality in the north-western Netherlands, in the province of North Holland. It is located north of Amsterdam, on the borders of the IJsselmeer.
Monnickendam (population as of 2004: 10,089), Broek in Waterland (2,346), Ilpendam (1,918), Marken (1,846), Watergang (422), Zuiderwoude (264), Katwoude (226) and Uitdam (155).
Broek in Waterland is located about 8km northeast of Amsterdam. In the 17th and 18th century, the town was a popular residence for merchants and seafarers from Amsterdam.
Marken is a former island in the IJsselmeer connected to the North Holland mainland by a causeway.
Monnickendam is the main town of the municipality. It is located on the coast of the IJsselmeer, about 10 km northeast of Amsterdam. It received city rights in 1355.
