The Mari people are natives of the Mari El Republic in the Russian Federation. They were formerly known as Cheremis. They are a Volga-Finnic people speaking two closely related Mari languages, Meadow Mari (марий йылме) and Hill Mari (мары йӹлмы).
Mari is also an ancient city in Syria (modern Tell Hariri) which flourished from 2900 BC until 1760 BC, when it was sacked by Hammurabi.
