Makhachkala (Russian: Махачкала́) is a city in Russia, the administrative center of the Republic of Dagestan. The city was founded in 1844 as a fortress; it became a town in 1857. The original name of the city is Petrovskoye (Петро́вское) — after the Russian tsar Peter the Great who visited the region in 1722. The city was renamed as Petrovsk-Port (Петро́вск-Порт) in 1857, and then as Makhachkala in 1921.
It has a population of about 325,000 people.
The city is subdivided into 3 city districts: Leninsky, Sovetsky, and Kirovsky.
