The Maine Coon is one of the largest breeds of domestic cat. The breed was created in North America and has very long, dense fur, and a bushy tail that is often striped. Other notable physical features include their distinctive mane and long fur between their toes. Maine Coons are very large, energetic cats, often exceeding 25 pounds. Although they are most known for tabby-coloring, many coat colors exist.
The name comes from the legend that a domestic cat released in the wilds of Maine interbred with a Raccoon, resulting in offspring with the Maine Coon characteristics.
