Auntie Mame is an autobiographical novel written by Patrick Dennis (1921 - 1976, born in Chicago as Edward Everett Tanner, III) about his relationship with his crazy aunt who raised him.

The novel was adapted for the stage by authors Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, based on Patrick Dennis's novel.

Mame, a Broadway musical adapation of the play, was produced in 1966 with book by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, and lyrics and music by Jerry Herman. It ran in New York from 31 October, 1956 - 28 June, 1958. It was revived in 1983 starring Angela Lansbury, who had originated the title role.

In 1966 both Bobby Darin and Louis Armstrong got into the United States and Canada hit charts with cover records of the musical's title song.
