Luciferin



         


Luciferin is a pigment occurring in organisms, like fireflies and some deep sea fish, which are capable of bioluminescence. A chemical reaction occurs between the pigment and adenosine triphosphate to form luciferal adenylate, which then combines with oxygen through the action of the enzyme luciferase to produces heatless, visible light.
