Mr. Justice Louis LeBel, B.A., LL.L., LL.M, DES. Born in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada on November 30, 1939 is a Canadian jurist. Son of Paul LeBel, Q.C., and Marguerite Sasseville. Educated at the Collège des Jésuites in Quebec City, B.A. 1958, then at Laval University Law Faculty, 1958-1962, LL.L 1961. Was awarded the Governor General of Canada?s medal, the Lieutenant-Governor?s medal and the Tessier silver medal. Called to the Bar in 1962. Received an LL.M. from the University of Toronto in 1966 and a graduate degree in private law, DES., from Laval University in 1965. LL.D. (honoris causa), Laval University, médaille du Barreau du Québec, 2000. Practised law in Quebec City with LeBel, Letarte, Bilodeau, Boily, 1963-1964, and with Désilets, Grondin, LeBel & Associés, 1964-1971. From 1971 to 1984, partner at Grondin, LeBel, Poudrier, Isabel, Morin & Gagnon. Author of various legal studies and articles, co-author, with Robert-P. Gagnon and Professor Pierre Verge, of Le droit du travail en vigueur au Québec, published by the Presses de l?Université Laval. Member of various committees of the Quebec City Bar and the Bar of Quebec, member of the editorial board of the Revue du Barreau, 1976-1982, and chair of that board, 1979-82. Member of the board of directors of the Corporation du Centre communautaire juridique de Québec, 1973-1975, and formerly a member of the legal aid committee of the Bar of Quebec. Vice-president of the Bar of Quebec, 1982-1983. Quebec Bâtonnier in 1983 and 1984. A lecturer at the University of Ottawa and at Laval University. Appointed to the Quebec Court of Appeal on June 28, 1984. Married in Quebec City on August 28, 1965, to Louise Poudrier (lawyer, LL.D., professor at Laval University Law Faculty until 2000), daughter of Louis-Philippe Poudrier and Dorothée Labrie. Three children: Paul, Catherine and François. Appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada, January 7, 2000.
