The London Borough of Hackney is a London borough in the northeast of inner London, formed in 1965 out of the former boroughs of Hackney, Shoreditch and Stoke Newington. It is one of the poorest boroughs but home to numerous clubs and a centre of the London arts scene.
Unlike most English districts, its council is led by a directly-elected mayor, currently Jules Pipe.
The borough includes the following areas:
The 2001 census gives Hackney a population of 202,824. It is 60% white, 12% black African, 10% Black Caribbean and 4% Indian. 32% of householders are owner-occupiers.
Hackney is the only inner London borough north of the Thames that currently has no London Underground stations (with the exception of Manor House, in the extreme north-west of the borough, and on the boundary with Haringey). However a current project to extend the East London Line will seek to rectify this.
