Lo Barnechea is a municipality (comuna) of Santiago, Chile. It is located in the northeastern extremity of the city and contains some of Chile's fanciest neighborhoods (including La Dehesa, site of one of Pinochet's homes) as well as slums (poblaciones).
Though sparsely populated, Lo Barnechea is the largest district inside the metropolitan province of Santiago, reaching all the way across the Andes to the border with Argentina. Santiago's most popular ski resorts lie inside its borders.
According to the census (2002) 50,000 people live in Lo Barnechea. The population of the district grew by up to 50% since the previous census in 1992, and is expected to keep on rising quickly because of big urbanization projects now in place.
