A number of noted individuals have been Rastafarians.

The visionary Jamaican activist and cultural leader Marcus Mosiah Garvey, (1887–1940), is sometimes described as the founder of Rastafarianism. However, Garvey appears to have rejected the beliefs developed by the Kingston street preachers who interpreted his political speeches in the 1920s and 1930s as religious prophecy.
